My wife had to attend a work conference on St. Simons Island, GA so I decided to tag along for a mid-winter getaway. (Ironically, a winter storm moved in at home and up to 7 inches of snow in the forecast. Lucky timing!)
After a short hour and something flight into Atlanta we connected to Brunswick, GA. Brunswick Golden Isle Airport (IATA: BQK) is not much bigger than Tom Nevers Field on Nantucket Island. One baggage carousel and three car rentals to chose from then we are out the door ready to explore the Island.
King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort
King and Prince Hotel–The King and Prince Hotel is a majestic oceanside spread that has a long and colorful history. First built in 1935 as a seaside dance club. Over the years it transformed into a hotel. During World War II it became a coastal watch and training facility during World War II and finally into the luxury resort it is today full of that wonderful Southern hospitality.
Easy beach access from the oceanside rooms. The beach is big, clean and easy to walk on. Great for an early morning sunrise walk or a late afternoon stroll. Check to their website for all the latest news about what is going on as well as awesome pics in the gallery. www.kingandprince.com
St Simons Island Pier / Neptune Park
Just over a mile from our resort was the St Simons Island Pier. It was a nice walk in the cool winter morning. The pier was full of activity. Local fishermen with their crab pots loaded with chicken legs and poles in the water. Couples sitting on the pier watching the never-ending recovery efforts of the Golden Ray cargo ship that capsized in September 9, 2019. And the interactions of the Boat-Tailed Grackles lurking all around the pier in a unique display of turf wars or mating, not sure which.
Lunch at the ECHO
After checking in at the resort, we met our colleagues at the ECHO, the restaurant in the resort lobby. A beautiful ocean view was the backdrop for our lunch. I had the Crab Cake BLT with hand cut chips. It was a delicious treat!
Thanks!
