Sunrise at King and Prince Beach Resort
Sunrise–Day 1
Today started a little before sunrise. I wanted to get some good sunrise video with my drone. After securing permission from the front desk last night, I set out to do my pre-flight checks. It had been a couple of weeks since I had flown my drone so I had to perform a system update. Luckily, those don’t take too long, so I was in the air within a few minutes. Scattered clouds were floating on the sunrise horizon like puffy balls of cotton. There were several gaps within the cloud structure, which makes for some magnificent colors as the sun starts rising.
I did get a few pics with my camera, but my focus today was drone work. True to expectations, the sunrise was splendid! What a great day to be ALIVE!
MV Golden Ray Wreckage St Simons Island View
Part of being a Dark Tourist is finding and exploring disaster sites. On September 8th, 2019 the MV Golden Ray, an auto transport vessel, capsized in the Port of Brunswick just off the southeast tip of St Simons Island. The 660 foot vessel has been laying on its port side as the recovery efforts will continue for many months still to come.
I had the pleasure of introducing some travel colleagues to the world of dark tourism. While we were on the pier, we met a new friend. This beach was one of the most astounding things I have seen. The dead tree remains have withstood the relentless shifts in the tides day in and day out. The sun-bleached trees that have died after years of erosion that exposed the root system. The view is amazing and well worth the short walk from the road!
Jekyll Island Northeast Beach
St Simons Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse on St Simons Island was built in 1872. The original lighthouse was 1861 by Confederate forces in an effort to prevent the Federal forces from using the beacon. It can be seen up to 23 miles out to sea. https://www.goldenisles.com/listing/st-simons-lighthouse-museum/183/
